Filipinos attend HRD Korea EPS Workers Forum

Last Sunday, April 22nd, more than a hundred Filipino EPS workers currently in Korea attended the EPS Workers Forum organized and hosted by HRD Korea in Namdong Industrial Park in Incheon. The forum started at exactly 1 o’clock in the afternoon and it was hosted by Ms. Gennie Kim, radio DJ and counselor.

POLO Welfare Officer Manuela Nuval-Pena first presented on the status of the Filipino migrant workers in Korea. She also discussed the services provided by OWWA (Overseas Workers Welfares Administration) to overseas workers during and after their stint.

Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Analyst Maria Alilia Maghirang showed the different options in earning from agriculture. Filipino EPS workers could invest their hard-earned money on agriculture while they are still working in Korea. Since the Philippines is divided into different regions, agriculture products vary and the knowledge provided by the DOA could help returning workers make decisions on their investment.

An official from HRD Korea talked about “Happy Return” ~ a program to assist EPS workers move on with their lives after their stay in Korea. The workers were given job application forms to fill in. Once in the Philippines, their names could be added to the roster of employees that Korean companies operating in the country could choose from. Many Korean organizations back home prefer Filipinos who have experience working with Koreans ~ as they are more familiar with the culture and the language.

Before the forum ended, the attendees were given the chance to ask questions. Most of them were curious about the current policies on extending their contracts in Korea.

We hope to see more forums hosted by government organizations concerned with the welfare of the Filipino EPS workers in Korea. Volunteers from FEWA or Filipino EPS Workers Association assisted in the forum.
